“To me, the Black gaze is to see Black culture through the eyes of black photographers. It matters as we often see the “White gaze” a lot in regards to Black culture and but when through a Black gaze, we can see the things missed, we can see more Blackness.”
How does the Black gaze relate to your photography practice?
As I do fashion photography and often tell stories through my imagery, when I have an idea that I want prominent Black people involved, I want that Blackness to come through the images.
What do you want to say or address with your photography?
That Black people are just as talented in photography as white people.
What influences and inspires you? How is this reflected in your work?
Music, art, life itself. I have ideas inspired by my own mental health and thoughts.
Who are your favourite Black photographers from the past? Why?
Campbell Addy, Gordon Parks, Tyler Mitchel, AB+DM studio are just a few. They all create timeless work that I hope to create myself.
Please describe the highs and lows of your experience as a Black photographer?
The highs: getting chances to speak on being a Black photographer on platforms such as this one. The lows: losing out to opportunities.
What work are you producing and what more would you like to do?
I’m currently working on my outlet “Seeing Red” which I hope to eventually make a couple coffee table books with it.
